Downsizing with Style

We’ve been working for Charles and Emma Howeson for more than five years, originally carrying out gardening services at their seriously impressive property in Crownhill (Smallack Barn). No mean feat!

They recently moved to a new property in the Millfields area: namely the magnificent, newly renovated water tower building. Their new garden was considerably smaller and no longer needed regular maintenance. What it needed was a more specific, expert touch. Fortunately, that’s our speciality.

The problem

First, we had to deal with the obligatory move-in tidy up. The couple arrived at the property in May and there was an awful lot to be done. We needed to clear out the beds at the garden’s boundaries, and fill them with shrubs and small trees that would provide a dense evergreen screen for better privacy and security.

Our second challenge was to sort out an area of the garden that had been planted with invasive bamboo. The Howesons wanted the area to be cleared and replanted with beautiful colour and climbing plants – again to provide privacy and security for themselves, and also for their neighbours.

The solution

When we tackled the first project, we knew the planting needed to grow quickly and achieve its full effect by the autumn of that year. Charles and Emma had their doubts, but we pulled it off!

The planting grew perfectly and met its objective by the autumn. We used a blend of Laurel, Grisellinia, Photinia, Choisya, Fatsia, Eucalyptus and more to achieve the finished effect. Two beautiful crab apples were planted either side of the entrance as a finishing touch.

For the second project, we booked a contractor to remove the bamboo, so that we could blitz the roots and refresh the ground with fresh soil and conditioner.

To achieve what we had in mind, we worked with climbing plants including Clematis montana, Honeysuckle and Parthenocissus quinquefolia (Virginia creeper). A selection of new plants from local tree nursery ‘Thornhayes’ was added to the vibrant mix: Liquidambar, Euonymus alatus, Euonymus europaeus, Portugese laurel, Amelanchier and more Photinia.
